We knew A.I. would come for all our jobs eventually, but I didn’t think about it happening like THIS . . .

“The Washington Post” just did a big write-up on how companies are now using artificial intelligence to choose who gets LAID OFF.

Google laid off 12,000 employees last month, and people thought some of the layoffs seemed a little random.  So they vented online and speculated that A.I. had a hand in it.

Google claims that’s NOT the case and there was “no algorithm involved” in the layoffs.  But that doesn’t mean it’s not happening at all.

Someone polled 300 HR managers last month, and 98% said they expected to use software or algorithms to help make decisions about layoffs this year.

On its surface, it seems like a pretty cold and inhumane way to can people.  But some think it might level the playing field and make sure valuable employees DON’T get let go.

Companies are also already using this type of tech in other ways too, including choosing who the best person is to HIRE for a position.

For example, A.I. can compare skill sets and weed people out.  It can also predict a person’s “flight risk.”  Meaning, will they take the job and jump ship a year later?

But it’s not good at everything yet.  Like, it might not recognize that a company has issues with discrimination.  So it could automatically assume women and people of color are more likely to jump ship.

In other words, things could get dicey if HR starts blindly following its advice without questioning it.
