TomPetty2017.jpgThe LOS ANGELES POLICE DEPARTMENT has confirmed to CBS NEWS that TOM PETTY has died at the age of 66.

Yesterday he was rushed to the hospital SUNDAY night after being found unconscious in his MALIBU home.

There they found he had no brain activity.

Earlier today, a decision was made to pull life support.

Hailing from GAINESVILLE, FL, PETTY dropped out of high school at the age of 17 in order to join the band MUDCRUTCH after taking guitar lessons from soon-to-be EAGLE guitarist DON FELDER. Although MUDCRUTCH also featured future MIKE CAMPBELL and BENMONT TENCH, the band would break up and PETTY went solo only to bring back those two along with RON BLAIR and STAN LYNCH to form the HEARTBREAKERS.

Their debut album came out in 1976. Along with subsequent releases, including five Gold and five Platinum-plus albums with the HEARTBREAKERS, two Platinum and one Gold solo albums, and two Platinum-plus and one Gold albums with supergroup TRAVELING WILBURYS, PETTY sold more than 80 million records worldwide.

He was inducted into the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME in 2002.
